STUNNING SUNSET FROM THE HAWAIIAN ISLAND OF MAUI
Historical 50 Year Kona Low Storm Slashes Our Maui Vacation
My name is Debbie L Lind and I’m a landscape photographer.
Taking a vacation to Maui, Hawaii is like taking a dream vacation so one ever thinks tragedy is going to happen. We got the idea to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary in Maui. We kicked our dream vacation in motion. The tickets were purchased, the air BnB was booked, car rental reservations made months in advance. Not only were we looking forward to fun in the sun but I was anticipating the photographic opportunities of tropical island, especially the sunsets.
With all the planning we did for our trip to take place in December 2020, COVID 19 hit the world, changed lives and we felt we had to cancel. However disappointing it was, we were able to reschedule our anniversary Maui vacation one year later and didn’t lose any money.
It’s now December 2021 and we’re on an airplane flying over the Pacific Ocean destination Maui. We were going to celebrate our 41st wedding anniversary. We couldn’t wait to hit the beaches, soak in the sun, swim the ocean, boogie board and more. I was full of anticipation to begin photographing the beauty of a tropical island. The first day there we took a walk along the sandy beach in the late afternoon. I brought my camera and planned to photograph the sunset. It was an ideal scene of the ocean and the palm trees were so magical.
Maui was feeling like the paradise it was and we were enjoying all it had to give. While we were at the beach we noticed the weather starting to change, so we packed up and headed to our BnB. By the time we arrived the rain was pouring buckets. The wind was causing the tropical trees to sway side to side. The sound of the rain was deafening, pounding the pavement like the beat of several drums. We watched and listened with awe. We were wondering how long this violent storm was going to last. About 7pm, a power station near us blew! Blue sparks lit up the dark sky. We lost our power and it was off for 24 hours. We had to open the emergency cupboard and all it had inside were flashlights. Water started to collect on the backyard patio and we thought it could enter the house. It was just about an inch below the sliding door. Do we go to bed and wake up wading in water or do we stay up and watch it come whooshing in?
We eventually went to bed as the storm died down. When we woke up the island had mudslides that blocked roads, the island still didn’t have power, the ocean was stirred up and we could go in it, the road to Hana was closed, it was cold and it rained the rest of our vacation. The storm slashed across the island leaving a lot of clean up to do and we had to change plans. We found out that this was a historical storm called Kona Low and it happens about every 50 years. Can you imagine planning for two years to go on a dream vacation and have have this happen. First it was COVID, then a historical storm, what’s next? We couldn’t go into the ocean the rest of the week and were limited on where we could travel. No trip to Hana, no beach time and definitely no swimming in the ocean. Our vacation took on a whole new look and feel. We were wearing coats and driving around the island where we could to see the sights and or damage from the storm.
What was wonderful was I did get my tropical sunset photographs. It was the first night we were there, before the historical storm Kona Low, and I’m so elated to have captured just what I wanted. I came home with true Hawaiian sunsets with rich reds and oranges weaved in the clouds glazing across the sky of paradise and the silhouette of palm trees sharing the island’s Aloha. I waited a lifetime for these shots or at least for two years. Would I have captured my stunning sunsets a year ago? I’ll never know but I feel that waiting was worth waiting for.
Aloha,
Debbie
