ARTIST PORTRAYAL OF A MARTIN D28 GUITAR

    A Musician's who found his dream guitar…

What do Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Paul McCartney, Elvis Presley, and Tony Rice have in common? They are a few of the elite who chose a Martin D28 Guitar to swoon us with their magical voice of songs that became a part of our lives. Those who are not famous also want to swoon on a Martin D28 Guitar like my son in law.

Is it the instrument or the person playing it that makes them great? Opinions of what makes someone or something great are many. But the Martin guitar is a contribution to countless acclaimed musicians since 1888 who were and still are driven to play C.F. Martin’s guitars. Christian Fredrick Martin had done so well in crafting his guitars that his business has been in the family for six generations. There are collections of different designs and the Martin's iconic sound is a huge member of many musicians' families. The dreadnaught guitar was developed by the C.F. Martin Company. It’s distinguished by its shape and size. A few iconic musicians who played or play their Martin D28 are Lester Flat, Judy Collins, Hank Williams, Neil Young, Tony Rice, and Clarence White. Although not famous and not his goal, my son in law is now the owner of his dream Martin guitar D28, also known as HD28,(the H stands for herringbone) he found in LA, California at the Sunset Blvd. Guitar Center. His focus is playing Bluegrass and feels he finally has discovered what he’s been searching for in his quest to be the best Bluegrass musician he can be since his teens. His love and desire to do so is cradled in his arms and he’s never letting go. Before I took on this photo project , I never knew anything about the Martin guitars.

It started out to be a gift for my son in law to hang photographs of his Martin in his new office. It’s a series of photographs I took showing the intimate design of his Martin D28 guitar. But for all who have one, who want one and may want to display their heart and soul in an office, studio or maybe in any room where it kindles your heart strings, these are for you too. I like photographing details and in doing so, I feel that even though the Martin is in a photograph, it can be admired from afar. It is with great respect from what I’ve come to know for the Martin and the musicians that I photographed this iconic instrument.

With my skill as a photographer, the guidance of what my son in law wanted in the collection of portraits of his Martin, the use of my macro lens, tripod and natural light, I closed the deal. I got close enough to his Martin D28 to view the herringbone rim, the Martin label inside the sound hole, and photographed its body as if it were a human's smooth curves showing the markings and the reasons this acclaimed guitar is desired. I feel I crafted its personality forever in photographs that will make his heart strings sing while he’s at work in his office.

My son in law decided he wanted to seriously build his skills as a musician and was financially sound to look for the possibility of owning a Martin guitar. On his business travels, he was able to scope out many guitars shops and didn’t walk out with one. His sight was on Martin D28. He was allowed to play several different Martins while looking but always came back to the D28. It had more sustain, more ‘bark’, rosewood back and sides with a spruce top. This was the guitar that the famed Bluegrass musician Tony Rice played. While in LA on his business trip, he was able to network the guitar stores and wasn’t having much luck until one shop owner told of a place called Sunset Blvd. Guitar Center. Even though he had to meet a plane ride home very soon, he took a chance and headed for the mentioned guitar shop. As he was driving closer to that neighborhood, it was looking questionable if he should even be in the area. The billion dollar houses were high on a hill overlooking the gross, dirty, city sprawl. Homeless people tents everywhere, trash, and an unsavory atmosphere. But once inside it was like being in a museum. Talk about sex, drugs and rock n roll, if only those iconic guitars could talk. There were famous guitars everywhere. Some were only for display. He asked the shopkeeper if he had any high end Martins by chance and the man responded as he waved, “they are up there”.

There were about 20 Martins displayed on a 15 foot wall. Of all the shops he’d been to, no one had that many and lucky to have one or two. So he asked the question “Do you have a D28?” The answer was a “no, I doubt it.” But then he checked his computer and like a magic wand was waved over it, he said, “I do have one.” He was ecstatic as it was exactly the one he wanted HD28. If he missed his plane ride, he’d catch the next one. HD28 was handed to him and he started to strum, he started to pick, he started to fall in love all over again. It was cumbersome at first because of the string spacing but he would grow to prefer that style. With financing all worked out he made his flight.

In the teenage years and in the time span of being 20 something and single, a lot of crazy can happen when playing music like drugs and alcohol. Going to gigs at festivals, weddings, BBQs, jam sessions can give way to bad habits. Fortunately, my son in law escaped the hardships of this lifestyle while a friend of his died from it. He eventually met my daughter, got married, settled into family life, and they’re raising four children. He backed away from music for a while, but has rediscovered it and been almost reborn since buying his Martin D28 guitar. No drugs or alcohol were needed or wanted this time around to interfere with his goal of being the best musician he can be. A rough road he is very glad to be done with and survived with a fresh new road ahead of him.

I’m thrilled I was able to photograph a collection of portraits of his Martin HD28 guitar. These photographs told his story of a dream of owning an iconic guitar and he’s now the man behind the Martin kicking up the jam of Bluegrass and being in a hometown band.

    Hear the music play,
    Debbie
