    Palouse Hills Photography Prints
    Iconic Red Barn
Palouse hills were formed over an extended period of time, in terms of thousands of years.

Imagine rolling hills as farmland and you have the Palouse located in the state Washington surrounded with the towns of Colfax, Asotin, Dayton, Palouse, Ritzville, Teko, Uniontown. The origin of the name "Palouse" is uncertain, but it is thought to have been derived from the French word "pelouse," meaning "land with short and thick grass" or "lawn." The Palouse is so famous that photographers from all over the world gather on Steptoe Butte to photograph its landscapes high above to view the 19,000 sq. miles of farming. Farming the Palouse boomed in the 1880's. The look of the patterns change throughout its season from deep shades of greens, rich dark browns of the earth to the golden hues from wheat and legumes that are harvested in late summer. This is where a few of us from my photography club traveled to get our own photos of such an iconic landscape. We took our trip to the Palouse in late May.

It was the first time I visited the Palouse and I wanted to bring it home as if I may never see it again. I took hundreds of shots and maybe brought home a few that are, I hope, breathtaking. Taking breathtaking photos is always my goal and my dream. They are many viewpoints of the Palouse and from Steptoe Butte, it's the most famous spot to capture its landscape. We ventured up close and personal with the fields driving down dirt roads and oohing and aweing over unique landscape before our eyes, or I should say before our camera's eyes. It's like trying to capture every wave of the sea, no one look is the same and each are worthy of a photograph. We spoke to farmers and waved at them going by us as we stood in awe with our cameras shooting every angle we could to show off the landscape of the Palouse. We saw coyote scat and even saw a few running through the fields.

My body doesn't work like it used to. Mostly my knees so hiking and moving up and down and kneeling became difficult for me. But I persevered and pretended nothing hurt because I didn't want my body to keep me from an experience like this. I will suffer later I told myself. Fortunately, my friends and I all are about the same age so no-one was in a marathon.

As a group we would gather in the evening and share our day. We'd discuss each other's photos like the outstanding compositions everyone had, the settings, how and why we took the shot at that angle and so on. We each had our own definition of what we wanted and where we wanted to stand. Being we were photographing the same place does not mean we all took the same photos. Really, this is the freedom of being a photographer and the envy when seeing someone's photo look better than yours. I felt somewhat very amateurish at times when viewing other's photographs. I never felt mine shots were better than anyone else's. Kind of wanted to kick my photos under the table. No one was critical but very helpful and supportive. We all learned from each other, had fun and being on an adventure with like-minded people was a great experience.

We would leave early in the morning. Our lunches packed in the cooler, camera gear charged up, dressed in layers, had a plan where to go next, maybe, it changed a bit here and there. We had two different rigs and sometimes we were together and sometimes not. We would meet up for lunch. How can we put down our camera and pick up a sandwich? We managed but cameras were within an arms reach. Not long after lunch, we'd head back to our air bnb and then head out again for an evening shoot. Sunsets on the Palouse are outstanding if you catch it at the right time. We caught very little good sunset shots. Disappointing, as I've seen some beautiful sunsets in photographs from Steptoe Butte, but didn't feel I captured the ONE.

Did you know that lighting storms and rain don't really mix with taking pictures? This sound silly for me to bring up, but I was not paying enough attention to the possible dangers of this combination. We were on top of Steptoe Butte and we saw a storm coming. The dark, gray clouds, raindrops hitting my face, wind, lightning, you know the signs. Well, I felt the signs on my being but didn't pay them much mind as I was focused on the shot. Then it wasn't until my friends were loaded into the van that they started yelling at me IT'S TIME TO GO. I looked up and saw how much the storm was over us and the lightning getting closer that I hurriedly gathered my gear and myself and ran to the van. Did I get a good shot of the storm? No.

I'm glad I wasn't a victim of lightning or the story of being the stupid photographer who was struck by lightning in order to get the money shot. I did bring home a collection of the Palouse, photos of my friends taking photos, a good time get away with like-minded people and hopefully photographs of the Palouse that even you will enjoy. About a month later we had a show and tell at our meeting. So many beautiful, unique photos our group took and the memories made us all want to go on another trip. We're planning to do another one.

My Palouse photo I share with you is just one of hundreds I took. Did all hundreds turn out like I wanted? No, I weeded those out and only release the ones I love. I feel I captured some essence of the 19,0000 square miles of landscape that is very worldly known. To have the opportunity to travel to such a remarkable destination is a privilege. I hope I can do more of those trips. The Eifel Tower would be nice.

    Set your sights on adventure,
    Debbie
