Tick Hill: Beauty Hidden, History Held

There’s a hill just beyond my window—modest, quiet, unassuming. We call it Tick Hill. Not the most charming name, perhaps, but don’t let that fool you. This hill holds something deeper than its title suggests. It rises gently from the earth in our corner of Northeastern Oregon, where the land still remembers. It remembers the steps of those who came before us—the Nez Perce people—who called this homeland. You can feel it in the stillness, in the hush of the wind weaving through tall grasses, in the way the light falls just so across the slope.
No one seems to know exactly why it was named Tick Hill, but if you hike it in the warmth of spring, you’ll likely carry a little reminder home with you. Still, the discomfort is small when measured against the beauty that unfolds there—especially in early spring. That’s when the green wakes up and spills over every inch of hillside, as if heaven brushed the earth with renewal.
The Nez Perce gather here each summer, their voices and dances rising like a sacred echo. Though I am only an observer, I watch with reverence. This is their ground, their story. I stand on the edges, grateful to witness history woven into movement and song.
A path winds to the top, steep but generous in reward. From there, Wallowa spreads out in breathtaking grace. I’ve walked it, heart pounding, lungs full, soul quieted. I once caught a glimpse of a fox slipping through the brush, its tail like a whisper vanishing into the wild.
Tick Hill may not draw crowds or headlines. But it draws us—those who live here, those who remember, those who seek. It stands in humble defiance of time, offering beauty, mystery, and a glimpse of something eternal.
