I never thought about being a sculpture artist until I discovered a huge boulder at a campsite my husband and I visited in Oregon. His eye was staring at me and knew the horse I saw in the rock wanted to be free. It was made up of several other kinds of rock and I felt him looking at me. That eye said I'm a horse and been waiting for thousands of years for you to bring me to life. Sculpting as a photographer, what does this mean to me, that is what I called my sculpture ROCK HORSE. My camera was my tool to bring the rock home and with my processing program, that was my chisel and that was how I brought him to life.

As a photographer, this experience taught me to look at objects in a new way and to see potential in things that others may overlook. It gave me a deeper appreciation for the art of sculpting and the skill and creativity required to transform a raw material into a work of art. My experience with my ROCK HORSE sculpture shows how inspiration can come from unexpected places and how different forms of art can intersect and complement each other.

It's fascinating how nature can create such intricate patterns and structures over time. It's a testament to the power and beauty of the natural world. As an artist, I was able to recognize the potential in the boulder and use my skills to bring out its inherent beauty and craftsmanship. It's a wonderful example of how artists can collaborate with nature and bring out its hidden potential.

Capturing the perfect photograph is an art in itself, and I have a deep appreciation for it. By taking the time to observe and appreciate the natural world around me, I was able to capture more than just a snapshot. My photographs tell a story and reflect the journey I've been on. They are a window into my experience and allow others to see and appreciate the beauty of nature through my eyes. I will keep exploring the world around me.

My husband and I drove from Northeastern Oregon on I84 which lines the Columbia River on a sunny, warm summer day. We're on vacation to camp at one of the many campsites along the river to enjoy the fresh air, stunning landscapes and relaxing. Hauling a camp trailer with the anticipation of a fun four days, we drove a few hours and made it to our destination. Once settled, we took a walk around the campsite and there was an entry way where a rock garden had large boulders. It was like an invitation to enter and look around. This is where I found ROCK HORSE. I was drawn to this one rock and then I saw he was looking at me and I said to myself I see you. I took several photos of that boulder and when I got home, I started chiseling away until I found him. It's amazing how sometimes something as simple as a rock lead me down a new creative path.

It was with great anticipation to start bringing to life ROCK HORSE. I tried very hard to make him strong and stunning by coming from the deep boulder he'd been trapped in for thousands of years. It's almost like the stories of the genie in a bottle. Except I had no expectations of wishes or good fortune.

When I was done with ROCK HORSE, I was able to send him to a gallery showing. He was well received. I didn't win any awards but ROCK HORSE had his debut by coming to life as himself not trapped in a boulder anymore. He glowed while hanging on a gallery wall.

I feel such a bond with ROCK HORSE as I was able to free him from the boulder and bring him to life after thousands of year being trapped. He can now bring joy to others as a horse brought to life by me.
