TROPICAL SENSATIONS IN MAUI

The first step onto the island, I could feel the warmth seep into my bones. After months of planning, of juggling responsibilities, and navigating the chaos of traveling with three children, we had finally made it. Maui. A tropical paradise, a world away from the snow-dusted mountains of Northeastern Oregon that we had just left behind. It felt like stepping into a dream, and I let myself breathe it in—each moment, each sensation.

The first taste of rainbow-flavored shaved ice was like nothing I'd ever had before. Sweet, cold, and refreshing against the warm island breeze. It was the kind of treat that made me feel like a kid again, carefree and giddy under the Hawaiian sun. Watching the vibrant colors melt into one another, it was almost like watching the sunsets I knew I’d capture on camera in the days to come—rich, vivid, full of life.

I didn’t need adventure to feel the magic of the island. While my family waded into the ocean, dove under the waves, and tested their limits on boogie boards and snorkels, I found my own peace in the small moments. Wading into the shallows, I let the waves gently pull at my ankles until one caught me off guard, knocking me down in a rush of laughter. “Goodbye, Grandma,” I thought as I tumbled, but I popped up again, water dripping, smiling wide. That’s the thing about life—you get knocked down, but you rise again, stronger, ready for the next wave.

I soaked in the sun, savoring the softness of the breeze on my skin, the rhythm of the waves against the shore. And, always, I had my camera. I captured it all—the towering palm trees that swayed in the wind like old friends, the way the light hit the ocean at just the right angle, turning it into a canvas of blues and greens. Each snapshot was a moment I wanted to freeze in time, a memory I could hold onto long after we’d left this island behind.

As I sifted through the hundreds of photos, one in particular stood out to me—a palm tree, its fronds stretching toward the heavens. I took a close up of one frond. It was more than just an image. It was a reminder. A reminder of the day I stood beneath it, feeling the sand between my toes and the sun sinking into my soul. That palm tree became a symbol of all that Maui was for me—freedom, warmth, peace. After the weight of COVID, after the long, hard months of isolation and worry, we needed this—our family, together, in a place that reminded us what it meant to breathe deeply and live fully. The island offered us a gift, one we’d hold onto long after our suitcases were unpacked and the plane ride home was behind us.

I didn’t need to be in every photo to know that I was there. My presence was in the smiles on my family’s faces, the candid moments I captured of my grandchildren playing in the sand, and the joy that radiated from each sunset I photographed. I was there, too, in every picture, behind the lens, preserving the memories that we would carry with us.

Yes, we came home from Maui with stories to tell and souvenirs in our bags, but it was the photographs that brought the island back to life. Each time I look at that picture of the palm tree, I am transported back to those moments. The island calls to me still, its warm embrace forever captured in the frame of my camera.
