In the heart of my passion for capturing the beauty of nature lies a journey that took me to the enchanting landscapes of Maui. I am Debbie, a landscape photographer who seeks the extraordinary in the ordinary – from majestic mountains to delicate flowers, each moment a canvas waiting to be painted by the lens of my camera.

I aspire to create art to be more than mere visuals; I want them to be a portals to one's sanctuary. Imagine walking into your favorite room, and my photographs adorn the walls, inviting you to a place of tranquility after a long day's journey. What room do you call your sanctuary?

Our family embarked on a vacation to Maui in December of 2021, blissfully unaware of the impending tragedy that would befall Lahaina two years later. As I reflect upon the horror of the Lahaina fire, I sift through the photographs captured during our visit, searching for the magical moments that now stand frozen in time.

Front Street, a bustling tapestry of life adorned with Christmas décor, the iconic Banyan tree, and the allure of Tommy Bahamas, unfolded before our eyes. The shops like THE WHARF lined Front Street and heart wrenching are no more. Little did we know the depth of the terror and healing the people of Lahaina would face. My heart aches for them, and through my photographs, I endeavor to preserve the spirit of Front Street before the fire.

The tropical air, sweet and inviting, accompanied us as we strolled in flip flops and embraced the warmth of December in Maui. A lunch at Tommy Bahamas, overlooking the vast Pacific Ocean, where even the pepperoni pizza tasted different from home, became a cherished memory. The abundance of souvenirs in the vibrant shops posed a delightful challenge of choices.

Midway through our vacation, a 50-year Kona Low tropical storm disrupted our idyllic island retreat. Power outages, landslides, and tumultuous seas barred us from the ocean's embrace. The road to the Hana Flower Garden, with its promise of tropical flowers and breathtaking views, remained closed. Yet, the tropical sunsets, palm trees, barefoot walks on the beaches, and the warmth of the Pacific Ocean linger in our memories.

Despite missing the exotic flowers of Hana, my lens captured the essence of Maui – my grandchildren catching waves, the rhythmic dance of waves, the grace of sea turtles, and the joy reflected in smiling faces. The tropical allure held us captive, and the return to mainland winter's snow and ice felt like bidding farewell to a magical dream.


The goal, etched in my heart, was to bring home our memories through my lens. From grandchildren riding waves on boogie boards to the dance of flowers, waves, and smiling faces, each frame encapsulates the essence of that magical vacation. Even without the exotic flowers of Hana, I brought home the beauty of sunsets as a testament to the tropical paradise that embraced us. In the midst of Maui's breathtaking tropical allure, we reluctantly bid adieu to its warmth, dreading the return to our mainland winter of snow and ice. It was more than a vacation; it was a journey into magic, frozen in the frames of my photographs. Memories that dance in a picture book to always reflect on.
