I am not a rock climber, nor do I harbor such desires, yet I found myself drawn into a world of heights and feats larger than life. It happened in Moab, where the towering landscapes of Arches National Park stretched out like a hand of the Divine, daring man to reach for its heights. My husband and I watched as a couple scaled one of the tallest rocks—its peak an untouchable throne, a place where only the bold could stand. Did they have permission? Were they allowed to? It didn’t matter. They reached the summit, and I couldn’t help but feel envy stir in my heart. They conquered, through sheer perseverance, desire, and strength. And while greater mountains may await them, this one, for now, was their triumph.

Our journey to Moab wasn’t about climbing; it was about witnessing. We sought to absorb every sight Mother Nature had shaped, to feel the pulse of creation in a place where the earth itself seemed sacred. My camera was my companion in this pursuit, intent on bringing home the soul of those ancient landscapes.

Yet, when we trekked the mile and a half to Delicate Arch, I knew my limits. The call of the towering rock wasn’t for me. The thought of scaling it, though awe-inspiring, remained outside my desires. I respected those who craved such an ascent but knew my place was at the base, admiring from afar the kings of mountains and their silent victories.

We paused, just in time to catch sight of the couple at the summit, their hands lifted to the heavens. I fumbled with my camera, hoping to capture that moment. But it was my husband, with the swift grace of luck, who immortalized their triumph. Jealousy crept in—not of the climbers, but of my missed chance to capture such glory. Their joy echoed in the air as they began their descent, and though I missed the shot, I felt my camera still told a worthy story of their achievement.

The air was crisp with the faintest scent of earth and pine, mingling under the warm, blue sky. Each footstep crunched over gravel and sand, the sound punctuating the otherwise quiet afternoon. The wind kissed my skin, a fleeting touch of coolness beneath the sun’s heat. And my eyes—they devoured the spectacle before me: the raw, untamed beauty of nature rising up in jagged cliffs and smooth arches. I tasted adventure, not with my mouth, but with my soul.

For a moment, as I looked at my husband’s photo, doubt clouded my heart. My own shots felt inadequate. Was my contribution to this moment enough? Could my images capture the awe, the triumph, the emotion that swelled in the hearts of those who made the climb? I feared I had failed to tell the full story.

But then, I realized—my lens had captured more than just the scene. It held within it the spirit of the journey. Even without the perfect photo, I could still feel the climbers’ elation and imagine the fire that burned in them as they reached the top. And so, even if they had scaled that rock without permission, even if they faced consequences for their daring, it would be worth it to them. They had touched the sky, and nothing could take that away.

As I stood before Delicate Arch, humbled by its grandeur, I understood something I hadn’t before. To climb is not just to scale rocks, but to ascend within. The act of reaching the top transforms you, offering a glimpse of the divine through the beauty of the earth. Until I made that climb, I hadn’t truly known what it meant to be at one with nature’s indomitable spirit.
Only then can you know what it means to conquer the impossible, to touch the sky.
