As a photographer with over four decades of experience, being able to photograph the sunset at Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park was an exhilarating moment for me. It's safe to say that being there felt like my own personal Disneyland. The park boasts numerous iconic landscapes, particularly in early fall when the colors are just beginning to change. One of goals was to capture a sunset scene that would truly be magical.

The weather was quite unpredictable, as summer was transitioning into fall/winter conditions in mid-September with elevations over 6000 feet. At first, it didn't seem like I would be blessed with a stunning sunset. I couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed as I've seen the work of other photographers who had captured remarkable sunsets. I wanted my turn at a Lake McDonald sunset, but while mine appeared to be a potential disappointment, I decided to set up my camera on a tripod about half an hour before the sunset, holding onto a glimmer of hope.

The sounds of nature enveloped me. The gentle lapping of the lake's waters against the shore, the rustling of leaves in the breeze. I could hear the whispers of fellow photographers as they set up nearby, sharing in the anticipation of the evening's spectacle. One young man was near me and new to his camera. I didn't know this until he asked me if he could 'copy' me. I said sure and spent the next hour showing him what f-stops, shutter speed, and ISO he needed to try and shared he really needs to practice. He felt much happier when he left and I hope his relationship between him and his camera grows.

The cool, crisp air of Glacier National Park in early fall brushed against my skin, reminding me that the seasons were in transition. I felt the sturdiness of my tripod beneath my hands as I adjusted the camera settings. I set the timer of my shutter to automatically go off in 2 seconds after my fingers clicked the button. An exciting reminder of the artistry in progress.

The scent of pine trees and earthy undertones of the forest filled the air. It was a fragrance that symbolized the pristine wilderness of Glacier National Park, a reminder of the natural beauty that surrounded me.

As the minutes ticked by, I began taking shots every few minutes. The magic of that evening didn't unfold until after the sun had dipped below the horizon. It was in that moment, as I patiently waited and hoped that the sun wasn't finished painting its masterpiece, that the true beauty revealed itself. The sky transformed into a breathtaking palette of yellows, reds, and blues, with the colors blending seamlessly together. Having the patience to wait for this incredible transformation was a beautiful payoff for me as a photographer.

In the last few days of our visit to Glacier National Park, the weather took a turn for the worse, and sunsets were nowhere to be found. However, the timing couldn't have been better for that one evening when I was able to capture the park's majestic sunset.

My husband and I had planned to make this same trip the year before, but Mother Nature had other plans. Our small community was hit by a hailstorm with winds exceeding 60 miles per hour, accompanied by baseball-sized hailstones – an unprecedented event. The damage was extensive, and we had no choice but to cancel our long-awaited trip to Glacier National Park. So, this trip was particularly special for us, and my photographs serve as cherished memories of our incredible American adventure.
