COVEY OF QUAIL
IN MY BACKYARD
Fall had swept in, bringing with it the soft rustle of leaves and a crispness in the air that signaled the season's change. I live just beside a small forest, where the trees cradle the quiet lives of neighbors and wildlife alike. It’s a place of peace, where quail make their home, raising their families beneath the shelter of the leaves. That afternoon, I stepped out onto the deck, breathing in the familiar scent of autumn, when I saw them—perched on a long branch, a covey of quail.
It was rare to see them all so still, framed by the gold and russet of fallen leaves. The sight tugged at something inside me, that quiet urging to capture a moment before it slips away. My camera was inside, but could I make it in time? Could I retrieve it before they took flight? My heart raced with the decision, and yet, I had to try.
I rushed back, grabbing my camera, the familiar weight of the 300mm lens already attached. It was a blessing, really—saving me precious seconds. As I returned to the deck, I exhaled in relief. There they were, still perched, still waiting. Their small, soft feathers ruffled slightly in the gentle breeze, but they stayed.
I raised my camera, focused, and as I clicked the shutter, the world around me seemed to hold its breath. I could hear the faint crunch of dried leaves beneath my feet, smell the earthy richness of the forest floor, and feel the warmth of the late afternoon sun on my skin. Every sense seemed alive in that moment, tethered to the beauty before me.
Each click of the shutter was a gift, a chance to capture something rare and fleeting. The quail, oblivious to the magic they carried, began to stir. I wished, for a brief moment, that they could understand, that they could turn and face me, but I knew better. Wildlife rarely listens to our wishes. Still, I took shot after shot, grateful for each one.
Then, just as quickly as they had appeared, they were gone—fluttering into the sky, their wings a soft hum in the quiet air. I caught their flight, too, one last photograph before they disappeared into the trees.
I lingered there for a moment longer, camera still in hand, replaying the moments I had just witnessed. Living beside a forest teaches you many things—patience, readiness, the importance of being present. Moments like this remind me why I keep my camera close, not tucked away. Because sometimes, you only get one shot, one chance to capture the extraordinary in the midst of the everyday.
And today, I had taken it.
