Sunflowers Call Me

NO TRESPASSING

To me, sunflowers are happy flowers and so photogenic. I enjoy photographing them and can focus on a single sunflower for at least 30 minutes, maybe longer. A sunflower, any color, any size, has so many angles to show off and I make it my purpose to capture them all.

Thousands and thousands of sunflowers have been photographed and I feel there's always room for one more. I'm a sucker for sunflowers. Creating a unique look for a sunflower is challenging. When I put my camera to my eye, this is what I'm looking for. I don't just take snapshots, it's like I'm doing a field study.

I haven't grown sunflowers for a long time. To fetch one to photograph, I'll seek other people's flower gardens. Once my eye catches a sunflower in someone's flower garden, I'll knock on their door and ask if I could photograph their sunflower garden. I also share with them who I am and if a photo turns out I will give them a copy. I've never been turned down. Sadly, if no one is home, I drive on. I don't trespass.

As a photographer, I want to take any opportunity to shoot photos of sunflowers because I may take the perfect one that really tells its beautiful story. I accent the shape, color, petals, and seeds. I shoot under, over, behind, in front and sometimes include the sky. I feel like a honey bee as I 'crawl' all over the sunflower. I also catch honey bees doing their honey bee thing while I'm taking pictures.

I keep my interest in photographing sunflowers because my eyes are drawn to their bright, cheery colors. They lift my spirits as I capture their life cycle. I gently wade through the garden of sunflowers brushing shoulders with them and it stirs their rustic fragrance. They not only give us their charm but they are growing seeds for humans and animals to eat. What an all around flower giving us beauty and food.

If I can only take one photo of a sunflower (or anything), I'll do it, but it is rare that it will be a magical, prize winning photograph. It is always best for me to take the time to achieve the best photo possible or don't waste my time trying to do it in one shot. I have gotten lucky a few times, but more times than not it was a waste to even try.

The thrill of taking my time photographing sunflowers and using the skills I've learned in processing my photographs is my mental therapy. I can be as creative as I want and give my sunflower a beautiful story to tell and share with others. The art of photography is my happy place.


RED'S MY COLOR is the title of my sunflower I photographed and created using photo processing on my computer. Being in front of my computer creating the art of photography is the spot for restoration. This is my 'canvas' and having the freedom to create the art of photography that brings me rejuvenation is why I'm a photographer. Just maybe I can bring this to you too.
