    SUNFLOWER SKY

    Do sunflowers give you smiles?

There’s something about a sunflower that evokes pure joy. They stand tall, faces turned to the sun, embodying resilience and beauty. You’ll find sunflowers blooming in fields all over the world, even in home gardens. Their golden petals are more than just a sight; they’re a symbol of hope and perseverance, especially poignant as the national flower of Ukraine, a beacon of light amidst the shadows of conflict.
When I photograph sunflowers, I strive to capture that first moment of wonder, the way a child sees the world. Each sunflower, though seemingly identical, has its own unique story. Perhaps one has a petal with a tiny hole, a testament to its journey, yet it stands proudly, undeterred. The center of a sunflower, with its intricate patterns and busy pollinators, is a world unto itself. From the towering giants with faces larger than dinner plates to the petite blooms like teacups, I aim to photograph every nuance, every detail, to tell a story through my lens.

It’s been a while since I grew my own sunflowers. These days, I find myself drawn to fields I come across, always respectful, always asking for permission before I step onto someone else’s land. Sometimes, I’m brave enough to approach the owner; other times, I remain on the sidelines, capturing what I can from a distance. The thrill of discovery, the freedom of the open road, and the allure of unexpected beauty keep me wandering and wondering.

Photographing sunflowers is an art, a dance with light and shadow. I take multiple shots, exploring different angles, basking in the soft glow of morning or the golden hues of evening. Even when the light isn’t perfect, I press the shutter, knowing that sometimes the most unexpected shots turn out to be the most captivating. Nature has its own rules, and sometimes breaking them reveals a hidden treasure.
Like all living things, sunflowers have their seasons. There’s a fleeting window when they’re at their peak, vibrant and full of life. Missing that moment can feel like a lost opportunity, a story untold. Yet, the life cycle of a sunflower, from bloom to seed, is a reminder of continuity and renewal. Their seeds, like tiny promises, ensure that the cycle begins anew.

In every sunflower, I see a reflection of life’s journey. They brighten my world, whether in a bouquet, a field, or a piece of art. Even as they wither, they leave behind the seeds of new beginnings. Just as the seasons turn, bringing rest and rebirth, flowers remind me of the perpetual rhythm of life. Spring, with its promise of renewal, restores not just the land but also the spirit.
Art in heART. Feel the Rhythm. Debbie
