REACHING DELICATE ARCH
"You are stronger than you think you are"

I stood at the trailhead of Delicate Arch, staring up at the towering red rocks in Arches National Park. The path ahead wound uphill for one and a half miles, leading to Delicate Arch. I had seen its pictures everywhere—Utah’s license plates, postcards, posters. It was one of the most iconic natural wonders in the world. But now, standing at the base, I wondered if I had the strength to make the journey. My body wasn’t as young as it used to be, and doubts gnawed at my confidence.

The night before, I had read stories from others who’d hiked the trail. Some warned of the treacherous drop-offs, the heat, the unrelenting climb. I couldn’t help but wonder if I was fooling myself, trying to accomplish something beyond my limits. But as we drove around Moab check out the town, something caught my eye. A sign on the side of the road that said "You are stronger than you think you are". The words echoed in my mind like a gentle nudge from the universe.

So here I was, with a water bottle, my hiking stick, and my camera. I took a deep breath, looked at my husband, ready to make this climb telling myself "I’m stronger than I think I am," I whispered, to myself all the way up. With that, we started walking.

The morning sun warmed the earth, and the sky was a brilliant blue with some sweeping clouds. The trail was steep, dusty, and surrounded by the most incredible rock formations. It felt like walking through time—each layer of red, gold, and orange stone a testament to millions of years of Earth’s history. Towering spires and smooth, curving boulders seemed to rise from the ground as if placed by some divine hand. Towers of red rock stood like a sentinels in the distance, and I marveled at how something so massive could remain upright.

But the trail was unforgiving. There were moments when the drop-offs made me leery, when my legs burned from the effort, and my breath came in shallow gasps. I repeated the words over and over in my head: I am stronger than I think I am. Each step became a prayer, a promise to myself that I wouldn’t give up.

We met others along the way, fellow travelers with the same determined look in their eyes. Some told us the view was worth it, others simply smiled as if they knew something magical awaited us at the top. One lady said it was stunning.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity (hour and a half later just going up), we rounded the last corner. There it was—Delicate Arch. It stood like a giant, carved by the hands of nature herself, waiting to greet me. The moment took my breath away. People of all ages stood in quiet reverence, snapping photos and gazing at the wonder before them. This was a larger than life moment for me.

We sat down on a smooth rock, among others who made the trek. The wind gently brushing my face, and I smiled. I had made it. Not just to the Arch, but to a place of triumph over doubt and fear. The universe was right. I was stronger than I had ever believed. And as I took my camera out to capture the moment, I knew this was more than a photograph—it was a reminder that no challenge. It ended up taking us 2 hours and 20 minutes to hike up and 2 hours and 20 minutes to come down. I made it, I did it, and I met my hero.
