WOULD YOU GET UP AT 4AM TO PHOTOGRAPH A SUNRISE?

The first light of dawn stretched across the desert, bathing the sky in hues of crimson and gold. I stood poised with my camera, heart pounding, waiting for the moment that would define this journey. Canyonlands National Park, a rugged masterpiece of time and erosion, unfolded before me, whispering ancient secrets through its red rock formations.

My husband and I had ventured from Oregon to Canyonland National Park to visit one of the famous arches, Mesa Arch. Our steps slower than they once were, walking sticks in hand to steady our journey we hiked the trail to reach the arch. The trails, though demanding, promised rewards beyond measure. Every careful step brought us closer to our goal—the epic shot that would encapsulate the soul of this land.

Mesa Arch was our destination, a natural window to eternity. Perched on the edge of a dramatic precipice, it framed a world bathed in morning light showing off the vast landscape of Canyonland. As the sun crept higher, the underside of the arch ignited in a molten glow, as if the rock itself had caught fire. The air carried the scent of dust and sage, dry and pure, mingled with the crisp coolness of dawn. The sounds of the desert whispered around us—the soft rustling of wind through twisted junipers, the distant call of a raven soaring overhead.

Even getting to the arch at dark thirty, we were not the only ones waiting for sunrise at Mesa Arch. There were many, many other photographers waiting there for the perfect photographic shot like I wanted too. I was somewhat distressed on how I was going to make this work for me. Being respectful to each person's space, I tried to work my way all around them and rocks to capture my shot and not make anyone mad. It was challenging but I made it happen. With steady hands, I adjusted my settings, waiting for the perfect balance of light and shadow. The anticipation hummed in my veins. Then, in an instant, everything aligned—the radiant arch, the vast canyon beyond, the infinite sky. Click. The shot was mine. It was a quick moment as there is only that one moment to catch the sunrise at its best in conjunction with the arch.

The journey had been both exhilarating and demanding. The uneven terrain challenged us, but every ache was forgotten in the presence of such beauty. As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in ethereal oranges and reds, I knew this moment would stay with me forever.

Canyonlands had gifted me its story, carved in stone and light. Through my lens, I had captured its magic, a piece of eternity to carry home, a testament to the adventure of seeing the world one frame at a time.
