ANT SIZE HUMANS UNDER DELICATE ARCH

Delicate Arch stands as a sentinel of time in Arches National Park, Moab, Utah. If you’ve never been, go. It will change you. This place leaves its mark on every visitor, just as it left its mark on the earth. One look at Delicate Arch, the icon on Utah’s license plates, and you see why—it’s a masterpiece, carved over billions of years. My husband and I went there in September 2024, drawn by its ancient beauty, eager to see it with our own eyes.

I set out with one purpose: to capture Delicate Arch’s essence through my camera, though I knew no lens could do it justice. To reach it, we hiked up a mile and a half just after sunrise. The trail began easily enough, but soon the terrain grew rugged, and I found myself clutching my walking stick as we navigated the twists and slopes. I wondered if I’d make it, feeling every step, every rough patch of rock, inches from a drop off, but I pushed on, repeating, “It’s not a race. I’m stronger than I think.”

We climbed almost in silence, only the soft shuffle of footsteps around us, the occasional murmur from others, all of us pilgrims on the same journey. As the morning sun rose opening the blue sky, desert reds, oranges, and greens painted the landscape, casting their light on this ancient cathedral of stone. We breathed in fresh, clean air and felt the sun warming our face with each step we took. When we finally reached the last bend, I rounded the corner—and there it was, a giant rock- the Delicate Arch, being its own captivating entity. It looked as if it had always been there, defying time and erosion, a humbling monument to endurance.

Standing before it, I was awestruck. I’d seen giant buildings, but they paled beside this natural colossus. I watched people making the extra climb to stand beneath it and get their picture taken in victory. They were like tiny ants against the arch’s vastness, and I wanted to join them. But my body said no, and that was okay. I felt a profound sense of accomplishment in reaching this point. Watching others below the arch made it real; it was a giant doorway through time, a place even dinosaurs might have known. For scale, I imagined a Tyrannosaurus or a school bus under its span, and I felt an urge to photograph it that way, with people below, to capture its towering strength against their smallness.

As I lifted my camera, I felt the weight of this journey settle in my bones—a mix of exhaustion, joy, and awe. The arch had been my goal, but the journey itself had changed me. We sat on a large boulders just staring at Delicate Arch for at least an hour. There was a shared sense of purpose among those of us who had finished the hike under the desert sun, each of us carrying our own reasons for being here. I came away from that hike with more than photos; I gained something invaluable—a memory that filled my heart, changed my soul, and reminded me of the grace in pushing through, no matter the barriers.
