HUNTING FOR BEAR AS TOLD IN PETROGLYPHS

What Story Do you See in Petroglyphs?

Experiencing Moab, Utah was like stepping into another world. Walking through time, I could almost imagine the early humans who lived there, long before our modern world took shape. The petroglyphs, left behind by indigenous peoples, whispered stories of a time so ancient, it stirred something deep within me. I felt like I had traveled back thousands of years, where the earth was wild, untamed, and filled with mysteries I could only begin to grasp.

My husband and I had planned this trip for nearly a year, eagerly anticipating our visit to Arches National Park and Canyonlands. September was our chosen month, hoping for cooler weather and fewer crowds. But as a photographer, this journey was more than a vacation—it was a chance to capture the essence of Moab, to bring home photographs that would tell the story of our adventure through the red rock arches and ancient landscapes.

We set out to explore Canyonlands National Park, specifically aiming to see the petroglyphs on Potash Road. These carvings, etched into sandstone, have stood the test of time, dating back to both the Archaic (6,000–1,000 BC) and Fremont (450–1,300 AD) periods. I marveled at the scene before me—a bear hunt, frozen in time. Three human figures, armed with bows and arrows, stood around the bear, showing another animal they hunted the bighorn sheep. The precision of their movements, the significance of their art, touched something sacred in me. Native American groups consider these panels as more than just art; they speak of migration, fertility, hunting magic, and ceremonies lost to the ages.

The petroglyphs were perched high up the mountainside, almost as if they were meant to be out of reach. But with my camera zoomed in, I captured the details of this ancient narrative, thankful they were safe from harm, out of reach of those who might not respect their significance.

The sky was a perfect blue, with soft clouds dancing across it. The air was clean, dry, and warm—ideal conditions for our trek. The rock formations, bathed in shades of deep red and orange, mixed with the dark blue-black sandstone that stretched across the mountain. The sandstone was smooth in places, rough in others, each surface telling its own story.
We drove along the highway slowly, scanning the rock wall for the one petroglyph we had been searching for—the bear. I nearly missed it, hidden behind a tree, but there it was. My heart raced. “I see it!” I exclaimed, excitement bubbling over as we pulled the truck over to the side of the road. There, in the sandstone, was the image of the bear, a creature long gone from Canyonland world but immortalized by those who walked this land so long ago. I snapped photos, knowing I was capturing something beyond just a simple image. I was preserving a piece of history.

Leaving the petroglyphs behind, I couldn’t shake the feeling of awe that had settled in my chest. To stand in a place that had witnessed millennia of change, to breathe air so fresh and untouched by the chaos of modern life, it felt almost unreal. Canyonlands was magic. If only I could have witnessed the rumbling, the shaking, the vast geological shifts that shaped this place billions of years ago. But you can't be in two places at once.
