THE COLUMBIA RIVER: A JOURNEY OF POWER AND TRANSFORMATION
The Columbia River stretches across time and rustic terrain, winding through the Pacific Northwest with a presence so grand, so formidable, that it carves its way into the hearts of those who witness it. From its beginnings in the serene Columbia Lake in British Columbia, to its expansive mouth at the Pacific Ocean, it tells a story of endurance, power, and grace. Its waters, once traveled by Lewis and Clark, remain an unyielding force, connecting communities, feeding landscapes, and bridging both physical and emotional divides.
On a recent visit to our daughter’s family in Washington, my husband and I had the chance to see the Columbia River as we had never seen it before. We were driving on Highway 14, a road unfamiliar to us, winding closely along the river’s edge. As we rounded a bend, my breath caught in my throat. The view was nothing short of spectacular—the river stretched wide, and went on forever. Mount Hood stood proudly in the distance, its peak piercing the sky. On one side, the highway hugged the river’s edge; on the other, the Oregon Trunk Rail Bridge spanned its vast width, a testament to human ingenuity meeting nature’s grandeur.
In that moment, every sense was alive. The smell of damp earth mixed with the sharp, cool air drifting from the river. The roar of the water, steady and relentless, filled my ears. I could feel the wind whip through the car window, touching my face, grounding me in the present. I gazed out, my eyes tracing the river’s path as it disappeared into the horizon, and my mouth tasted the crispness of the coming evening. It was as if the river itself was calling, inviting me to pause, to truly see.
But we were in a hurry. Time, always a barrier, left me no chance to fully absorb this moment, to set up my tripod, to linger and capture the depth of what I was witnessing. Yet even in haste, the Columbia River did not let me go. I snapped a photo from the moving car, knowing it wasn’t perfect, but somehow, it didn’t matter. The river had already imprinted itself on me, filling me with a sense of awe, a sense of something greater than myself.
Later, as I processed the photo, I realized that it wasn’t just a picture—it was a reflection of something deeper. The river’s endless flow, its strength in the face of obstacles, spoke to me of overcoming, of moving forward even when the path is unclear. It was a reminder of the journey each of us is on, where the true transformation happens not in the arrival, but in the steady, sometimes tumultuous, movement through life.
The Columbia River, with all its might and mystery, is more than just a river. It is a symbol of resilience, a testament to the unseen ways in which nature shapes us. I long to return to that stretch of Highway 14, to stand once again before its grandeur, to witness its beauty with fresh eyes. In its vastness, I found not just a view, but a reflection of my own internal journey—the endless flow of life, the overcoming of barriers, the quiet power of transformation.
