I never imagined I’d find a sermon in a stone. But there, on the rocky shore of Medicine Lake in Glacier National Park, I caught my breath. The wind stirred my hair, whispering secrets through the pines. My boots crunched against the gravel as I looked down—and saw it. Nestled among jagged grays and quiet shadows, lay a single heart-shaped rock. Cool, smooth, perfectly imperfect. It felt like a love letter from the Creator Himself, left just for me.

I picked it up gently, the chill of it grounding me, and marveled at its shape. How had nature carved such a tender symbol from such a hard beginning? I didn’t take it. That would’ve broken the spell. Instead, I set it carefully in a small composition among the other stones, honoring the place it had come from. The scent of wet earth and distant pine wrapped around me as I framed the image. It was holy ground.

Later, I asked Google—how does a rock take the shape of a heart? Erosion. Time. Water shaping stone. The answer was simple, but it held the weight of truth. Life wears us into beauty, too. Waves smooth the jagged places. Wind rounds our edges. What felt like a mystery was really grace in slow motion.
I thought about adding a leaf—something golden, something “fall”—but I couldn’t force it. The rocks didn’t need embellishment. They’ve been here long before I arrived, and they’ll stay long after I’m gone. Their silence tells stories older than mine.
