COUNTRY SKY ON FIRE

In the late spring, as summer whispered on the horizon, I stepped into my backyard and witnessed a spectacle of sunsets. Three distinct sunsets painted the sky simultaneously. To the east, the one I share with you, in the middle, raindrops shaped like clouds, and to the west, clouds that seemed to belong to the cosmos. The most striking was the one that reminded me of ocean waves and a bright red barn nestled in the landscape. I gazed upwards, telling myself I had never seen such an exhilarating and breathtaking sunset before or since. It was a powerful sunset, reflecting off the hills and trees.

I reside in a small rural community with a population of around 600 souls. Traffic and sirens are rare, and when they do pierce the silence, concern arises, for in a small town, everyone is accounted for. Instead, I hear the gentle sounds of cows, chickens, and children at play. There are no stoplights, and the landscape is free from a tangle of wires. The scenery is serene, changing with the seasons, and it is enchanting to behold.

I captured many versions of the sky-filled sunset, choosing the one that best described the beauty and spellbinding clouds of oranges, yellows, and reds. This photo graced the cover of our local photography annual calendar, which is shipped worldwide. We have our admirers.

Every community, city, country town, and byway has its own special gift of beauty. It is a balm for the soul to be present in that moment and capture it forever. That late afternoon, I was there, and with the help of my camera, I created a moment that can now last a lifetime. And I did it from my own backyard. I cherish my rural community and hope I never have to leave. If I crave the bustle of a bigger city, I can travel there, but I am always glad to return home, kick off my shoes, and let my hair down. I am a lucky girl.
