Joyful Outdoor Haven with Double Rainbow

When you hear these words Over the Rainbow, what do you think of? For me, it's THE WIZARD OF OZ and Dorothy singing SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW with such heart. She had challenges that she was able to overcome. I was just a child and it was a joy for me to watch this movie for many years of my life. It had a happy ending. I didn't have challenges like Dorothy but I had to live my life trying to understand my dad's PTSD. How did I happen to capture this photograph? Being at my friend's beautiful garden with a double rainbow and my camera in hand, was great timing. I wasn't thinking of my dad's PTSD at all. Rainbows bring hope, beauty, and it's one of nature's most beautiful pieces of work. I felt my friend's remarkable flower garden I photographed was a perfect name as there before me, were double rainbows glowing its magnificent colors over her flower garden. No wicked witch here.


I feel at peace when I look at my photograph OVER THE RAINBOW. I would like it to nurture positive feelings for someone in their home, office, or even in a hospital. Art whether you view or create it, nourishes your brain. But I don't think this intently when I admire art, even my own art. As I've done research on mental health and how art gives humans rejuvenation to the mind, heart, body, and soul, I want to share my art with as many people I can. Just maybe my art of photography could help get a person through a tough time. Maybe I could inspire that person to take up a camera and discover an outlet when the world is too much for them. I've want to hang my photographs in hospitals and doctor waiting rooms but I haven't been able to make this happen. I even set up a presentation with the local health board, who were building a new facility, to introduce my work as a possibility for wall art to hang in their new building. They said when they got the walls painted they'd call me. Even in my letters and follow ups, they didn't reply. Being persistent can be difficult for me and I can give up.


As a photographer for over 45 years, I feel I can capture a quality photograph. I've been told I have the 'eye' and talent. I've won a few awards and some money. Do all of my photos turn out no. It's ok. I'll take more. I will succeed and hopefully someday my work can be in hospitals, and waiting rooms, your home or office, but my most important reason for being a photographer is the joy it gives me and the joy I can give to someone else.


I grew up with mental illness in my family. It was my dad who had to work through PTSD all his life. I've seen the hardships and challenges he went through to his dyeing day. He was a beautiful, giving man and it was still difficult for me to understand his mental illness even as I became an adult. As a child it was scary for me and that feeling didn't change when I grew up. I never learned how to help my dad cope. My mom was brave to embrace my dad and endure his Jekale and Hyde moments throughout 50 plus years of marriage.


But in the end, it took a toll on my mom. Her health went downhill and trying to cope with dad got harder. She passed before my dad and he died 8 years later. My dad was a photographer in his younger days and gave it up when he started a family. My dad never drank or took drugs to self medicate. One time he told me if maybe he would have come home from work and had a beer, it would have helped him. His dad and one of his brother's were alcoholics. Just maybe if he could have kept up his photography, it would have helped him mentally to express what he couldn't really say that festered inside of him. I think of mom and dad being together with angel wings.


I received my first camera at 15. It was a Kodak 110 pocket camera and it was the latest in camera technology at the time . Do you remember those? That was the beginnings of my photography career and helped nurtured me as I've gotten older. As I grew older, I got more interested in the craft of photography and bought my first 35mm Olympus OM1n camera. I burnt a lot of film. I can't help but feel my dad influenced me in becoming a photographer. I'm a photographer in honor of him and hope I've made him proud. My mom crocheted, sorry mom, I never learned how to crocheted. But she was superb in her craft. I have a few of her pieces in Afghans and animals she made as keepsakes.


As I get more interesting in life, I'm thankful for the love and devotion my family was for each other. I look through photo albums and see the photos I took growing up of my mom and dad and it's like I'm home again. I can say hi and I miss you. I'm so happy I had my camera with me for so many years to capture my family in stages of their life, and found how flowers, landscape, nature bring me such joy. I can keep the Kodak moments forever . If I don't have my camera with me, I'm real disappointed and feel I missed the best opportunity in the world for the one in a million photograph. I'll still think about those lost Kodak moments I missed, but know that I try not to miss many more. OVER THE RAINBOW is more than just a photograph or a song, what memories does it bring to you?
