I CREATE NEW SPECIES WITH PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN OF FLOWERS
Yellow Eye Moth Designed with Fractals
As a photographer with over 45 years of experience, I've learned and grown through self-teaching, mentors, books, workshops, and countless hours of practice. Recently, I discovered the captivating world of fractals and decided to incorporate them into my photography. Fractals, with their self-repeating patterns found in nature, have become a new source of inspiration for me. I'm excited to explore this unique artistic approach and create visually stunning images.
There are times I want my photography to be used uniquely and once I discovered fractals, I began my fractal photography artwork. The art of photography became even more artsy as I started designing butterflies, dragonflies and moths using an array of photographs I've taken of flowers, leaves, masks and rocks.
When creating my new species, I have to decide what photos to use for fractals, colors, above all else what critter I am designing. I usually have to try several photos before I even get started. I don't always get the design the way I want the first time and sometimes not at all. The colors, or the shape changes throughout my creation. Often I have to start over and need to realize, it's ok. It's my own species and I can make it however I want.
I enjoy using my photographs as fractals to design a work of art that takes my photograph beyond ordinary. I used my photographs I took of a yellow iris, purple iris and a yellow tulip to construct Yellow Eye Moth.
Have you ever heard of a sculpture say he or she saw an eagle in the wood and this is what they carve out? I have a vision before I sculpt my fractal design. If I want to make a butterfly, I look up butterflies to try to simulate what butterfly I had in mind. I try to match the colors, how many legs, will it sit on a flower or will it be flying? I set my 'canvas' up on my photo processing program, create a file to save my parts I'm going to sculpt. What photos do I use? I go through all of my photographs and save all that I feel could be a part of my design. I save all steps of my process, whether I use them or not. I design each piece of the insect and then put the pieces together. I might say that I have to sometimes let parts of my art 'dry' before I can go to the next layer of design.
My fractal projects take time as I piece it all together and I may not always like it, so I'll start over. This happened a couple of times with Yellow Eye Moth.
When I was finally happy with my last try of Yellow Eye Moth, I thought where is it going to live. I found tree bark I photographed and felt this would be a happy home for it.
I believe Yellow Eye Moth will enjoy living on this tree. When I look at it, I feel a new species was born. I can see Yellow Eye Moth hanging in a home where someone enjoys Mother Nature and her possibilities. Not that I'm Mother Nature, but it's rewarding to pretend to be her.
